Abstract

The mechanisms of science communication, while complex, can still be explained, to some extent, by the game of telephone which has a similar set of roles involved. With telephone and science communication, you have the givers of information and various receivers who can misinterpret messages. Nonetheless, as stated previously, science communication still retains a degree of complexity because you find yourself within a telephone network with many telephone lines. Consequently, you may be overwhelmed by the amount of information; thus, it becomes difficult to discern what is true. However, in the end you still manage to somehow choose to believe, select, or endorse a particular message. But, what allows you to ultimately choose one message? The answer to this question lies in the type of information that is conveyed to you, the narrative. This type of information can come in various forms that some may be more receptive to for various reasons. To better understand what these reasons are an investigation of the vaccine controversy’s history and the narratives involved are performed so that you have a better understanding of how information is consumed or relayed.
