Abstract
Max has been confined within the borders of Colorado and Nebraska for his entire childhood. He longs to see the beaches of California. He finally gets the opportunity to go abroad. He winds up spending most of his time in class or staying in and doing homework. When he has a short break from schoolwork, he jumps at the chance to explore an area off the beaten path with a girl from the Study Abroad program. They have a great adventure, but this adventure becomes more than either of them were asking for. After they get back from this island getaway, Max finds himself in a downward spiral, trying to make sense of what has happened to them. His various coping mechanisms are variously effective and destructive.
