Abstract

Many different types of infections can occur during pregnancy. Common infections include sexually transmitted diseases (syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes), urinary tract infections, group B streptococcal disease, listeriosis, and toxoplasmosis. A number of antimicrobial therapy regimens may be used during pregnancy. Pharmacists are in a key position to improve outcomes for pregnant women with any of these infections through recommendations for antimicrobial therapy, monitoring for adverse effects, prevention of drug interactions, and counseling on adherence. Counseling points for pregnant women include appropriate preventive measures, such as lifestyle modifications.
